MEPC 84: A temperature check for the future of the shipping industry’s climate agreement
This week, member states of the UN’s shipping body, the IMO, will meet for new climate negotiations at the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 84).

The meeting follows six months of significant political uncertainty and a lack of progress on a global climate regulatory framework for shipping.
The proposal for an IMO Net Zero Framework was postponed in autumn 2025 due to the lack of agreement among key member states. The Norwegian Shipowners’ Association continues to believe that climate regulation of shipping must take place through the IMO and supports the IMO’s adopted target for shipping to become climate‑neutral by 2050.
