In spring 2011, Norway as a seafaring nation is without reinforcements in the battle against piracy. The Norwegian Shipowners’ Association believes that Norway must take responsibility.

Norwegian military presence in the oceans outside Somalia
- We are relieved by the Norwegian government’s decision to contribute with an Orion aircraft and staff officers throughout 2011 to protect the traffic at sea towards pirate attacks in the oceans outside Somalia, says Director General of the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association, Sturla Henriksen.

Norway must take immediate measures against piracy at sea
Norway’s reputation as a great seafarer nation stands in sharp contrast to its lack of active contributions to minimize the pirate activity in the Bay of Aden and the Indian Ocean. The Norwegian Shipowners’ Association holds the opinion that this slows down important political work and weakens the industry’s international impact and influential power. The Norwegian Minister of Defence Grete Faremo, has no anti piracy measures planned until the already scheduled contribution in the Bay of Aden in 2012.

Record high ransom sums
The pirate activity outside Somalia is a financial drain on the shipowners. On average, the pirates now receive ransoms constituting a total of NOK 24 million. This is, according to Krigsforsikringen for Skib (Norwegian war risk insurance for ships), twice as much as in 2009.
