Facts

Nearly 20.000 vessels cross the Gulf of Aden each year. Approximately 1000 (five percent) of these are Norwegian controlled vessels. 46 vessels were hijacked in Somali waters in 2008, the number increased to 52 in 2009, and in 2010 the number of hijacked vessels reached 61. Per March 2011, a total of 31 vessels and about 800 crewmembers are in the custody of the pirates. Several Norwegian vessels have been subjected to hijacking attempts.

Norway must take immediate measures against piracy at sea

Norway’s reputation as a great seafarer nation stands in sharp contrast to its lack of active contributions to minimize the pirate activity in the Bay of Aden and the Indian Ocean. The Norwegian Shipowners’ Association holds the opinion that this slows down important political work and weakens the industry’s international impact and influential power. The Norwegian Minister of Defence Grete Faremo, has no anti piracy measures planned until the already scheduled contribution in the Bay of Aden in 2012.
