Facts

The Norwegian offshore fleet is the world’s most modern and its second largest. Supply vessels and anchor handling vessels make up the majority of the fleet, which totals 550 ships in all. 60 percent of the fleet sails under the Norwegian flag. Norwegian offshore service companies account for 80 percent of activity at Norwegian shipyards.

Each vessel built at a Norwegian shipyard requires 500 man-years of labour – and in this way, the shipowners are responsible for many jobs and a lot of value creation along the Norwegian coast. During construction of an offshore vessel, the shipyards draw on the supplies of around 100 equipment providers throughout Norway; banks and classification societies are also key actors.

Norwegian companies also control some 60 moveable offshore installations, primarily drilling rigs. All rigs on the Norwegian Continental Shelf are members of the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association.

The Norwegian offshore fleet is the world’s most modern and its second largest. Shipping companies participate in all phases of petroleum activities – from initial seismic surveys to production and finally decommissioning of non-producing fields.

The shipping companies are tightly integrated with small coastal communities and are crucial for employment and value creation in Norway's regions.

The NSA believes that it is important to sustain high and consistent levels of activity on the NCS to safeguard revenue for the Norwegian economy, create future-oriented jobs along the coast and enhance the industry's competitiveness abroad.
